SNAKE RIVER

ON THE REAL TRAIL

The Snake River was one of the most feared crossings on the trail. Many parties crossed at Three Island Crossing near present-day Glenns Ferry, Idaho, using the islands as stepping stones in the strong current.

Others chose to stay on the south side, a longer and drier road, rather than risk the water.

IN THE OREGANO TRAIL

A deep, dangerous river. Look at the depth: past about two and a half feet a tipped wagon can drown someone, so caulking or waiting is often wiser than fording.
