FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
About The Oregano Trail, the retro wagon game for iPhone and iPad.
Is The Oregano Trail free?
Yes. The full trail is free to play from Independence to the Willamette Valley, with no ads and no subscription. The Trail Pass is an optional one-time purchase that adds seasons, trading, and the Hard Road.
Is this The Oregon Trail?
No. The Oregano Trail is an independent game made as a tribute to the computer-lab classics of the 1980s. It is not affiliated with The Oregon Trail or its owners.
What devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad, from the App Store. There is no Android version at the moment.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The game plays 100% offline, on a plane, in a tunnel, or in a classroom with no Wi-Fi.
Can you die of dysentery?
You can, along with cholera, measles, typhoid, snakebites, drowning, and exhaustion. Good rations and a sensible pace keep most of it away.
How do I win?
Reach the Willamette Valley in Oregon with your party leader alive. Your score counts who survives, the supplies and cash you still have, and how fast you made it, then multiplies by your profession: farmers score triple.
What is the best way to cross a river?
Check the depth. Ford shallow water, caulk and float the wagon in deep water, or pay for the ferry when you can afford it. Waiting a day usually lowers the river.
Which profession should I pick?
Pick the banker for your first trip: $1,600 buys a well-stocked wagon. The carpenter repairs breakdowns, and the farmer starts poor but earns the biggest score.
Does it save my game?
Yes. The game saves your journey automatically, so you can stop at any point and pick up the trail later.
Is it good for school?
It works well alongside lessons on westward expansion. It has no ads, no accounts, and no chat, and when in-app purchases are turned off on a device the Trail Pass offers are hidden. See the page for teachers.
Does it collect personal data?
No. It sends anonymous play statistics that cannot be linked to you, and you can turn them off in Settings. The full privacy policy is on the home page.
