KANSAS RIVER
ON THE REAL TRAIL
The Kansas River was the first big river crossing on the trail, near present-day Topeka. Ferries ran there in the 1840s, and many emigrants paid to cross rather than risk the current.
For a lot of families it was the first real test of the trip: unloading, floating or ferrying the wagon, and getting the animals across.
