BIG BLUE RIVER

ON THE REAL TRAIL

The Big Blue crossing in northern Kansas could be easy in a dry year and dangerous after spring rain, when emigrants sometimes waited days for the water to fall.

Nearby Alcove Spring was a popular campsite. Members of the Donner Party camped there in 1846, and one of them, Sarah Keyes, died and was buried near the spring.

IN THE OREGANO TRAIL

A second river crossing. Rain makes fording riskier, and waiting usually lowers the water.
