FORT LARAMIE
ON THE REAL TRAIL
In 1848 Fort Laramie in present-day Wyoming was a fur-trading post, a place to rest, repair wagons and buy supplies. The U.S. Army bought it the next year, in 1849.
Prices here were high, and many emigrants lightened their wagons nearby, leaving behind furniture and other heavy things they had hauled from home.
IN THE OREGANO TRAIL
The second fort, at one and a half times Independence prices. A good place to check clothing before the mountains.
