CHIMNEY ROCK

ON THE REAL TRAIL

Chimney Rock in western Nebraska is a tall, narrow spire of rock rising above the plains. Travelers could see it for days before they reached it, and it is one of the landmarks mentioned most often in emigrant diaries.

Seeing Chimney Rock meant the flat prairie was ending and the harder country of the high plains and mountains was ahead.
